When is the best time to visit Ho Chi Minh City?

May to November is the rainy season; showers usually arrive in the afternoon and pass, so plan outdoor sights for the morning and keep an afternoon for museums or shopping.

Which area should I stay in?

On a first visit, stay in District 1 around Nguyen Hue and Dong Khoi to walk to the Opera House, the Post Office and the river. For nightlife and casual street food, pick Ben Thanh and Pham Ngu Lao.
