Mandarin Oriental Qianmen is set in a cluster of courtyard houses in the Caochang hutongs, south-east of Qianmen, about a kilometre from the Qianmen gate. Each wing keeps its tiled roof, exposed timber beams and grey brick walls, opening onto tree-planted courtyards in true hutong spirit. Rooms are minimal, with large beds and wooden tea tables, and many have a freestanding tub looking onto the brick courtyard through a glass wall. Guests have a spa, a gym, a restaurant, a bar, room service, a 24-hour front desk and facilities for children; check-in is after 15:00 and check-out by 12:00. Ideal for couples and slow travellers who want to sleep in an old house with five-star service.
