Overview

Beijing was the capital of the Ming and Qing dynasties, with the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven and the Summer Palace in the city and the Great Wall in the hills to the north. Five days covers the capital; to add Hangzhou, Suzhou and Shanghai, choose a seven-day tour with a bullet train south.

Best time

Autumn (September–October) is cool with golden and red leaves, the best time; spring in April–May is also pleasant. Winter is dry and very cold; summer is hot and rainy.

FAQ

Do I need a visa for China?

It depends on your passport: some nationalities can enter China visa-free for short stays, while others, including Vietnamese passport holders, need a visa. Our group tours include a group visa for Vietnamese passports. If you are only buying tickets, check the current rules for your nationality with your airline or the Chinese embassy before you travel. Your passport should be valid for more than 6 months.

When is the best time to visit Beijing?

Autumn, in September and October, is cool and colourful, the best time for the Great Wall and the Summer Palace. Spring in April and May is also pleasant. Winter is dry and very cold, and summer is hot and rainy. Avoid major Chinese holidays, when sights are packed and Forbidden City tickets are hard to get.

Mutianyu or Badaling?

Badaling is the most famous section, with a wide wall and a cable car, but it is often very crowded. Mutianyu is carefully restored, surrounded by forest, usually quieter, and has a cable car and a toboggan. Both work for a first visit with older family members; for better photos and fewer people, choose Mutianyu and go early.
