The night train is a favourite way to reach Sa Pa: board in Hanoi in the evening, sleep through the journey and arrive at Lao Cai station early in the morning. From Lao Cai it is about 35 km up a mountain road to Sa Pa, roughly an hour by car; you can add a transfer from the tickets section. Sleeper cabins come with bedding and a lockable door, usually four berths, which suits a family or a group travelling together. The "from" price is the cheapest class or direction on sale; fares by cabin type, direction and departure time appear when you choose a date. Good if you would rather not sit in a car for hours and want to save a night's hotel.
