Ha Long sits on both sides of the Cua Luc strait: Bai Chay on the west with its beach, Sun World and cruise port, and Hon Gai on the east with the old town and markets. Tuan Chau is an island with a cruise harbour. Most visitors spend a day or a night on the bay by boat.

Day cruises last around 4–6 hours and visit Sung Sot Cave, Ti Top Island or Thien Cung Cave, which suits a single day or a same-day trip from Hanoi. An overnight cruise lets you see sunset and sunrise on the bay and reach quieter areas; many people spend one night on a boat and one in Bai Chay.
Bai Chay has the beach, Sun World and plenty of hotels and restaurants, handy for evenings out. Tuan Chau has the cruise harbour, ideal the night before boarding. Hon Gai, across the Bai Chay Bridge, is quieter and close to markets and local eateries. Hung Thang, west of Bai Chay, has resorts and apartment hotels facing the bay.
