Overview

Most visitors start France in Paris, with the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre and the Champs-Élysées, then a day out to Versailles, Giverny or Mont-Saint-Michel. With more time, fly or take the train south to Nice on the Mediterranean, or stop in Lyon, the food city on two rivers. Our European group tours usually combine France with Switzerland and Italy over ten or eleven days.

Best time

April to June and September to October are the most pleasant. July and August are sunny and busy; November to March is cold with short days and Christmas lights.

Do I need a visa for France?

It depends on your passport. Many travellers need a Schengen visa, which also covers the other Schengen countries on our routes such as Switzerland, Italy, Austria and Germany, while some nationalities can visit visa-free for short stays; check the current rules with your airline or a French consulate before you travel. Our group tours from Vietnam help Vietnamese passport holders with the application, and each tour states whether the fee is included.

When is the best time to visit France?

April to June and September to October are the most comfortable for walking Paris and taking day trips. July and August are sunny with long days but crowded and pricier, and the best months for the beaches of Nice. November to March is cold with short days, but the streets are lit for Christmas and the museums are quieter.

Which area of Paris should I stay in?

For Eiffel Tower views and the cruise piers, stay around the Eiffel Tower and Trocadéro. Shoppers and boulevard walkers like the Champs-Élysées or the Opéra area near the Galeries Lafayette. Museum lovers do well near the Louvre; café and old-street fans pick Saint-Germain or the Latin Quarter, and Montmartre suits those after an artistic feel at a gentler price.
