A first trip to Thailand is usually Bangkok and Pattaya: shopping, temples, night markets and a beach close to the capital. For finer islands head to Phuket with Phi Phi and Phang Nga Bay; for hills, Lanna temples and cooler air go north to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai.
November to February is dry and cooler, the best time. March to May is very hot; June to October is the rainy season, with rough seas off Phuket.
Direct flights to Bangkok take about 1 hour 30 minutes from Ho Chi Minh City and about 2 hours from Hanoi; there are also direct flights to Phuket and Chiang Mai.
