Overview

Phu Quoc is Vietnam's largest island. The north has Grand World, VinWonders, the Safari and Long Beach; the south has the Hon Thom cable car, Sunset Town and Sao Beach; Duong Dong town in the middle has the night market.

Best time

November to April is the dry season: sunny days and calm seas along the west coast and around the An Thoi islands, ideal for island hopping and snorkeling. May to October brings short tropical showers and southwest winds; the west coast is choppier, but room rates drop.

Direct flights

Phu Quoc International Airport has direct flights from Hanoi (about 2 hours), Ho Chi Minh City (about 1 hour), Da Nang, Hai Phong and a growing list of Asian cities. International visitors arriving directly on the island can stay up to 30 days without a visa.

How long

Long Beach (Bai Truong) is close to the airport and lined with big family-friendly resorts. Duong Dong and Ong Lang put you near the night market and local eateries. The north (Bai Dai, Ganh Dau) is next to GrandWorld and the safari park. The south (An Thoi, Kem Beach, Sunset Town) has the island's best sand, the Hon Thom cable car and the evening shows.

Getting around

From the airport it is roughly 10–15 minutes to Long Beach, 15 minutes to Duong Dong, 25–30 minutes to Sunset Town and An Thoi, and 40–45 minutes to GrandWorld and Bai Dai. Getting around is mostly by taxi, ride-hailing apps, private car or rented scooter; many resorts run their own shuttles.

When is the best time to visit Phu Quoc?

November to April is the dry season: sunny days and a calm sea, good for beaches and boat trips in the south. May to October is the rainy season; showers come and go quickly, but the west coast can be rough on some days, so pick a hotel with a pool and keep boat trips flexible.

North or south of the island?

The north has Grand World, VinWonders, Vinpearl Safari and the resorts on Long Beach and Ganh Dau. The south has the Hon Thom cable car, Sunset Town and Sao Beach. Duong Dong in the middle is handy for the night market and restaurants. On a 3–4 day trip, most people stay in one area and visit the other by car for a day.

Do I need a visa for Phu Quoc?

If you fly into Phu Quoc on an international flight and stay on the island, you can stay up to 30 days without a visa. If you enter Vietnam somewhere else first, you need a Vietnam visa or e-visa. Check the latest rules with your airline before you travel.
