Overview

Hanoi’s heart is the Old Quarter and French Quarter around Hoan Kiem Lake, with West Lake to the north and newer districts to the west. From the capital, Ninh Binh and Ha Long make easy day trips, and Ha Giang, Ta Xua or Sapa are a few days away.

When is the best time to visit Hanoi?

September to November is cool and dry, the best time for walking the city and visiting Ninh Binh. March and April are mild with blossoms. Summer from May to August is hot with frequent showers, and winter from December to February is cold and damp, so pack warm layers.

Can I visit Ninh Binh or Ha Long Bay as a day trip from Hanoi?

Yes. Ninh Binh is about 100 km away, roughly 2 hours by car, and Ha Long is about 2 hours 30 minutes each way on the expressway. The day trips under things to do include pickup in Hanoi and return the same evening.

Do I need a visa for Vietnam?

Most visitors need a Vietnam visa or e-visa; some passports can visit without one for a set number of days. Check the latest rules for your passport with your airline or the official e-visa site before you travel.
